No. 15 ASU Gymnasts Host UNO's Classic

This Week --The No. 15 ranked Arizona State University's gymnastics team looks to get back on the winning track with the UNO's Classic on Friday, Febuary 24 at 7:00 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena. Competing teams include No. 17 Oregon State, Boise State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Sun Devils, under 26th-year head coach John Spini, are in a new era of Sun Devil gymnastics with the $2 million John Spini Gymnastics Training Facility on the ASU campus. It is the first time in five years that the squad has trained on campus. Spini looks to lead the Sun Devils to an NCAA regional berth for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Spini is currently ASU's longest-tenured head coach, and is tied for second on the all-time Sun Devil head coaching list with long-time track and field mentor Senon 'Baldy' Castillo. Former Sun Devil women's tennis coaching legend Anne Pittman holds the distinction as the longest-tenured ASU head coach in school history at 31 seasons. With a 196.675-194.575 loss to No. 9 UCLA and wins over Cal-State Fullerton and UC-Davis last Sunday, his regular-season record is now 312-125-2 over 25-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 164-27-1.

ASU In The Rankings --ASU debuted at No. 14 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released in December. ASU fell three spots to No. 15 in this week's rankings, which are based upon regional qualifying score (RQS). Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected third in the preseason poll with 579 votes and three first-place bids. ASU received 293 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 9 Stanford (417), No. 13 Oregon State (331), No. 17 Arizona (188) and No. 18 Washington (185). ASU Faces Nation's Finest --Arizona State will face eight of the nation's Top 25 teams in 2006, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils meet in `06, Utah was No. 2, UCLA No. 3, Stanford No. 9, Iowa State No. 11, Oregon State No. 13, Arizona No. 17, Washington No. 18 and Denver No. 21 in the preseason coaches poll. Five of those meetings are at home in Wells Fargo Arena.

ASU In The Rankings/Individual & Team Events --Senior Ashley Kelly is ranked 8th nationally in the all-around (39.105) while junior Cassandra Jusino is 22nd (38.855). Kelly ranks 4th (9.875) on the balance beam. Kelly also ranks 25th on vault (9.83). ASU is ranked 15th nationally as a team and 8th on the balance beam (48.725). The Sun Devils are ranked 19th on floor exercise (48.56), 17th on the uneven parallel bars (48.515) and are tied for 10th on vault (48.990).

ASU Versus UNO's Classic Field --Arizona State University trails the all-time series with No. 17 Oregon State, 40-19-1. The Sun Devils trail in regular-season meets (9-19-1) and in postseason competition (10-21-1). ASU is 6-4 at home versus the Beavers in Wells Fargo Arena, 2-11 in Corvallis and 1-6 at neutral sites. The Sun Devils lead the series with Boise State 12-1 (6-0 at home) and have never faced Wisconsin-Oshkosh in gymnastics.
