Feb. 21, 2006
LOS ANGELES --- Will Miller threw six shutout innings Tuesday as the San Diego State Aztecs defeated the No. 24 USC Trojans, 6-1, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. The Aztecs turned a triple play in the eighth, highlighting the upset against the host Trojans.
Miller (1-0) allowed just three hits on the evening.
San Diego State (4-7) jumped out early after Brock Ungricht's RBI single off Shawn Olsen. Olsen (1-1) took the loss for USC (7-5), allowing three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Tim O'Brien added an RBI double in the third, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Nick Romero. O'Brien, Jordan Swaydan and Paul Smyth registered two hits each for the Aztecs.
Cyle Hankerd, who only had two at-bats on the night for the Trojans, had his season-opening hitting streak snapped at 11 games.
Garrett Gipe provided the lone run for USC with an RBI double in the eighth, but was part of the Aztecs' triple play later in the innings. With runners at first and second, Roberto Lopez lined a shot to second baseman Sam Pepper with both runners going on the pitch. Pepper tagged second and threw to first to retire Spencer Pabst for the rare defensive feat.
USC hosts Waseda University (Japan) in an exhibition tomorrow at 4 p.m. before traveling to Hawai'i for a three game series (Feb. 24-26). Game times are 6:35 p.m. (Honolulu time) on Friday and Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. All three games in Hawai'i will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
