Washington's Stevens, USC's Kennedy Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week.
Feb. 21, 2006
WASHINGTON sophomore third baseman Matt Stevens has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and USC junior right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy has been named Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 14-20, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Stevens, from Lake Stevens, Wash., went 6-for-14 (.429) with a double, a triple, three home runs, six RBI and four runs scored in the Huskies' 3-1 weekend trip to Cal State Northridge. On Saturday, he became the first Husky in 12 seasons to hit for the cycle, hitting a single, a double, a triple and two home runs in his six at bats in the Dawgs 16-6 win over the Matadors. The last Washington player to hit for the cycle was Jon Vander Griend on the final day of the 1994 season. Stevens also went yard in Monday's 8-7 loss at Northridge. In the four games, he played error-free on defense, successfully fielding 10 chances.
Kennedy, from Huntington Beach, Calif., was one out away from a no-hitter in Friday's 10-1 win over Kansas in the first day at the Public Storage Baseball Classic. Kennedy had struck out 13 batters before his run was ended with a single to center. On the evening, Kennedy (2-1) allowed one unearned run on one hit with three walks. The game marked Kennedy's 10th time in his career to register double digits in strikeouts. With 308 K's, he is only the seventh Trojan in school history to record 300 or more strikeouts in a career.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Stevens' career, while it is the 48th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Kennedy, and the 57th selection all-time for USC.
