Feb. 22, 2006
No. 6 Stanford (13-2, 4-2 Pac-10) will participate in the Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships this Wednesday-Saturday, February 22-25. The swimming portion of the 2006 conference meet is being held at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, California. Finals will begin each evening at 6 pm, PT, with preliminaries also being held Thursday-Saturday at 11 am, PT. The divers will compete Thursday-Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Washington.
Stanford posted a 13-2 overall dual meet record and was 4-2 against conference foes during the 2005-06 regular season. The Cardinal also won the Speedo Cup. Stanford opened the season with a win against San Jose State (199-94) and then posted an impressive 192-156 victory over Texas in a two-day meet at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal kept rolling in the fall with a Big West Shootout championship, going 8-0 in a pair of five-team dual meets over two days to win the title. After winning the Speedo Cup to conclude the fall portion of its schedule, the Cardinal was out of competition for nearly two months before returning to action for five conference meets. The Cardinal knocked off Arizona (137-106) and Arizona State (182-112) its first two meets back in the pool before being knocked off at UCLA (180-120) to end its hopes of an unbeaten dual meet season. The Cardinal rebounded with a 158-142 win at USC the next day before being defeated by California (169-131) in its final dual meet of the season.
Swimmers that don't qualify for the NCAA Championships during the 2006 Pac-10 Championships or the 2005-06 regular season will have one final opportunity to qualify at the Pac-10 Invitational on Sunday, February 26 (11 am, PT). The event is also being held at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, California, and is open to participants in the 2006 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships, other invited institutions and invited USA Swimming teams.
