Feb. 22, 2006
USC's 200y medley and 800y freestyle relays both finished third on the first day of the 2006 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
The diving portion of the Pac-10 Championships, for both men and women, will be held Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 23-25) in Federal Way, Wash.
California and Arizona, which each won one race, are tied for first with 120 points while USC is in third with 108 after the short first day.
USC's 200y medley quartet of sophomore Hayley McGregory and freshmen Rebecca Soni, Kristen Lahey and Melissa McIntyre finished third in 1:40.25, the Women of Troy's second-lowest time of the season (behind only a school-record swim of 1:39.97 by the same group against UCLA). Arizona led the entire way and won in 1:39.60 while California, which was the top seed, took second (1:39.98).
Troy's 800y free relay of junior Kalyn Keller, freshman Rachael Waller, McGregory and sophomore Rhi Jeffrey finished third in 7:10.80. Cal, again the top seed, won the race in 7:08.31 while Arizona edged USC for second in 7:10.00. USC's time was an NCAA 'A' cut, a season best by more than four seconds and less than two seconds off the school record (7:09.14).
Competition continues Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 23-25), with preliminary heats beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
