No. 23 USC Hosts A Pair Of Pac-10 Foes This Week

THIS WEEK: The Trojans are focusing on getting back in the win column after getting stuck with three straight losses for a 4-4 overall dual match record entering this week. USC host No. 46 Arizona State at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 24) and then face No. 53 Arizona at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 25). Both matches take place at Marks Stadium.
ITA RANKING UPDATES: USC (4-4) is ranked No. 23 in the latest ITA team rankings (released Feb. 22). Sophomore Kaes Van't Hof is ranked No. 91 in singles, and holds a No. 38 doubles ranking with Jeff Kazarian. Arizona State is ranked No. 46, and Arizona is No. 53.
RECENT RESULTS: The Trojans lost their third straight dual match with an upset loss to No. 36 San Diego last week. USC's double tandems of Loucks/Snyder and Kazarian/Van't Hof remained undefeated in double dual match action, and Al-Agba/Cvetkovic also picked up a win at No. 1 doubles to lock down the doubles point for the Trojans with a sweep. In singles play, Kaes Van't Hof downed his Torero opponent, but losses at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 positions left, USC trailing the match 3-2. Playing at No. 6 singles, Chong Wang win a 6-4, 6-2 victory that tied up the match with a three-set battle raging at the No. 3 slot. Adam Loucks had come back to push the match to a deciding third set, but USD pulled out the match-clinching victory with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 score.
USC VS. ASU: USC is 49-8 all-time against the Sun Devils. The teams split matches last season, but the Trojans posted the latest win with a 5-2 victory during Pac-10 play.
USC VS. ARIZONA: USC is 86-1 all-time against the Wildcats. That one loss came in a 5-4 decision on April 4, 1981. USC posted 5-2 and 6-1 wins over Arizona last year.
2006 TROJANS: The 2006 USC squad, led by fourth-year coach Peter Smith, is highlighted by nine returning players from last year's team that reached the NCAA Second Round and finished the 2005 season with a No. 21 national ranking. This year, the Trojans boast four newcomers to the roster as USC works toward improving on last year's 12-13 overall record and 3-4 fifth-place finish in Pac-10 play.
HEAD COACH Peter Smith: Peter Smith, the 2004 Pac-10 Coach of the Year whose teams have now made 12-straight NCAA appearances, enters his fourth season as head coach of the Trojan men's tennis program. Smith's collegiate coaching career includes five years (1998-2002) at Pepperdine, six years at Fresno State (1992-1997), four years at Long Beach State (1988-1991) and three years at USC. He boasts a 319-164 (.660) overall record, is 49-29 (.628) with the Trojans and has led his teams to 12 NCAA appearances, including last year's second-round run, and 10 top-25 finishes. He has been honored as conference coach of the year a total of seven times and was the 2002 ITA Region VIII Coach of the Year.
