Trojans Fall to Oregon, 73-61
Feb. 24, 2006
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Malik Hairston scored 16 of his 18 points in the final 12 minutes to help lead Oregon to a 73-61 victory over USC on Thursday night.
The Ducks' Aaron Brooks led all scorers with 20 and Ray Schaefer had 13 as Oregon (13-15, 6-9 Pac-10) defeated the Trojans for the seventh time in eight meetings.
Gabe Pruitt, who scored 30 points in an 84-78 win over Oregon at Eugene on Jan. 28, missed his fourth straight game because of a fracture in his left knee.
Oregon, coming off a 67-37 blowout of Washington State on Saturday in the Ducks' final home game of the year, could get a first-round bye in next month's Pacific 10 tournament by finishing sixth or better in the conference. The Ducks are currently seventh, a half game behind USC.
The Trojans, coming off a 71-68 upset over 19th-ranked UCLA on Sunday, never led against the Ducks in the second half. Hairston scored 13 points during a 5:46 span in which Oregon extended a two-point lead to 61-53 with 7:46 remaining.
Schaefer briefly put the Ducks in a bind when he picked up two offensive fouls in the first 2:05. But the 7-foot sophomore didn't get another foul the rest of the game and scored nine consecutive Oregon points during a 2:58 span to help give his team a 41-36 lead with 15:10 to play.
USC narrowed the gap to 61-57, with Francis scoring nine points during a 4:20 span. But Oregon closed with a 10-2 run.
Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in the first half, ending a 9-2 run that gave Oregon a 30-27 lead at halftime. Reserve guard Dwayne Shackleford made a pair of 3-point baskets 50 seconds apart for a 25-21 lead with 4:26 left in the half.
USC, which has called the Sports Arena its home since 1959, will play there for the final time on Saturday against Oregon State. The Trojans will move into the Galen Center next season.
