UCLA Gymnasts Drop Dual Meet At Arizona
Feb. 24, 2006
Tucson, Ariz. - UCLA had a rough start to its meet at Arizona, falling three times on bars in the first rotation, but the Bruins recovered to post a mark of 194.7 in a dual meet loss to the Wildcats, who scored 195.35.
The Bruins scored just 47.9 on bars, with Kate Richardson (9.8), Ariana Berlin (9.825) and Kristina Comforte (9.85) providing the high marks. Arizona, meanwhile, scored 48.8 on vault to take a nearly one-point lead after the first rotation.
It was an uphill battle for UCLA after that, but the Bruins responded well in the second rotation, scoring 49.025 on vault. Richardson led all gymnasts with a 9.9. Berlin and Ashley Peckett added a pair of 9.825s, and Jordan Schwikert (9.75) and Janelle Dantzscher (career-high tying 9.725) also brought in solid marks.
UCLA moved to floor exercise in the third rotation and closed the gap a little, earning a score of 48.825 to Arizona's 48.375 on beam. Richardson led the Bruins with a meet-high 9.925. Berlin scored a 9.825, and Schwikert added a 9.725. Both Dantzscher twins had out-of-bounds penalties that dropped their marks by one-tenth, with Jalynne scoring 9.7 and Janelle 9.65.
The Bruins closed the meet on beam, with the pressure of a leadoff fall on their backs, but each team member responded with grace under fire, with Janelle Dantzscher scoring a 9.55, Berlin a 9.75, Schwikert and Richardson with back-to-back 9.875s, and Comforte closing the meet with a career-high tying and meet-winning 9.9. UCLA's beam score was 48.95, and Arizona scored 49.075 on floor to clinch the victory.
Richardson won the all-around, her seventh of the season, with a score of 39.5. She also won the vault (9.9) and floor (9.925) and tied for second on beam (9.875). Berlin placed second in the all-around with a career-high 39.225.
UCLA will next compete on Sunday, Mar. 5 in the home finale against Stanford and UC Davis at 2 pm. The Bruins will honor senior Kate Richardson in pre-game festivities as she competes for the last time in Pauley Pavilion.
