Feb. 26, 2006
HONOLULU --- Joe Spiers went 3-for-4 with three RBI Saturday as the Hawai'i Rainbows earned the series win with a 7-3 victory over the No. 24 USC Trojans in non-conference action at Les Murakami Stadium. The Rainbows took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning, following a 4-3 win on Friday.
USC (7-7) mustered only three runs despite 14 hits on the evening. Ryan Cook (0-2) allowed three runs in three innings as Trojan pitchers accounted for eight walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches. Ian Harrington (2-1) scattered 10 hits in six innings for the Rainbows as he allowed just two runs. Tyler Davis threw three innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second on Darin Vieira's RBI groundout. In the bottom of the fourth, Hawai'i loaded the bases off Cook, who allowed back-to-back singles and a walk. Shawn Olsen entered the game and allowed a walk to Matt Inouye to tie the game at one apiece. Designated hitter Kris Sanchez singled to right and an Olsen wild pitch made it a 3-1 lead. Spiers singled to center for the fourth run, but Sanchez was cut down at the plate on a throw by USC center fielder Daniel Perales.
USC attempted to cut the lead in the sixth with runners at first and second and two outs, but Spiers made a leaping catch on a hard line drive by Hector Estrella. The Rainbows put the game away with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Spiers lined a two-run single up the middle with two strikes.
The series finale will take place at 1:05 p.m. (Honolulu time) on Sunday (Feb. 26). The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
