Arizona State's Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Players of the Week
Feb. 27, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE juniors Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke have been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 21 - 26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
On Saturday, the Sun Devils clinched the doubles point with a big win by Pooler and Clark over USC's Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani, who were ranked No. 24 by the ITA. The pair trailed early and seemed to be heading to a 1-0 deficit, when Pooler turned the momentum of the match with a big spike at the net which bounced in front of the Trojans and left the court entirely for a Sun Devil point. From there, Pooler and Clarke took their first lead at 4-3 and won the final four of five games to clinch the match, and doubles point, with an 8-4 victory.
The duo extended its winning streak to five matches on Sunday, defeating UCLA's Laura Gordon and Anna-Viktoria Lind, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles spot. Pooler and Clarke, who jumped to a 4-0 lead, found the Bruins fighting back and faced a 40-love hole. ASU won the game in the deuce and went on to defeat UCLA, 8-5.
The pair of wins last weekend improved Pooler and Clarke's overall record to 17-3 and 6-1 in dual matches. It was their eighth win in the last 10 matches.
This marks Pooler and Clarke's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, respectively, and first weekly honor all-time for Arizona State. The tandem are the first in the Conference to be named Players of the Week as a doubles team.
