Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke Earn ASU's First Ever Pac-10 Player of the Week Honors
Feb. 27, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Sun Devil juniors Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke have been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 21 - 26, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday. Pooler (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa) became the first ever players to earn the Conference award for Arizona State University and are the first doubles team in the conference to earn the award.
The duo posted a 2-0 record over the weekend with victories in dual matches against conference foes USC and UCLA. On Saturday, the Sun Devils clinched the doubles point with a big win by Pooler and Clark over USC's Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani, who were ranked No. 24 by the ITA. The pair trailed early and seemed to be heading to a 1-0 deficit, when Pooler turned the momentum of the match with a big spike at the net which bounced in front of the Trojans and left the court entirely for a Sun Devil point. From there, Pooler and Clarke took their first lead at 4-3 and won the final four of five games to clinch the match, and doubles point, with an 8-4 victory.
They extended its winning streak to five matches on Sunday, defeating UCLA's Laura Gordon and Anna-Viktoria Lind, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles spot. The Devils came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the pro-set using their power and athleticism. However, the Bruins were able to battle back, tying the set before taking a 6-5 lead. Regrouping, the Devils settled back into their game plan for the match and facing a 40-love hole, ASU battled back and won the game in the deuce, shifting the momentum in their favor. Leading 7-5 and with the advantage in the deuce, Pooler put the finishing touch on the match as she charged the net and spiked the ball in front of the Bruins' players, sending the ball careening onto the running track of the neighboring Sun Angel Stadium and giving the Devils a doubles win by an 8-5 score.
The pair of wins last weekend improved Pooler and Clarke's overall record to 17-3 and 6-1 in dual matches. It was their eighth win in the last 10 matches.
The Sun Devils return to action this weekend as they travel to northern California for a pair of Pac-10 matches against No. 1 Stanford (March 3) and No. 9 California (March 4). They return home on March 7 for a non-conference match against No. 22 Wake Forest at the Whiteman Tennis Center at 1:30 pm MST.
