UCLA Knocks Off Long Beach State, 6-3

Long Beach, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team dealt No. 15 Long Beach State its first home loss of the season with a 6-3 win over the Dirtbags on Tuesday night at Blair Field. The Bruins improve to 6-9 on the season, and beat Long Beach State at Blair Field for the first time since 1995.
Freshman Cody Decker went 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run, senior Chris Jensen went 2-for-4 with a RBI double and two runs scored, and freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-5 with a RBI double and run scored.
Junior Brian Schroeder (2-0) went 7.0 innings in the start with two strikeouts giving up three runs on four hits to earn the win. Junior Hector Ambriz threw a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
UCLA jumped on the scoreboard fast in the first inning with a two-run bomb by Decker to left center with Jensen on first base and two outs to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. Decker's jack was the first home run by a Long Beach State opponent at Blair Field this season.
The Bruins tacked on another run in the second inning after back-to-back walks to senior Anthony Norman and freshman Eddie Murray put runners on at first and second. Senior Josh Roenicke sacrificed Norman and Murray over to third and second, and freshman Ryan Babineau followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Norman and put the Bruins up 3-0.
Schroeder was perfect through the first three innings before giving up a walk on four pitches to Matt Cline. Danny Espinosa then singled to right to give the Dirtbags their first hit of the game. Evan Longoria walked to load the bases, before Brandon Godfrey grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score Cline from third. Jose Hernandez followed with an RBI single to center field to score Espinosa from third and cut the Bruins' lead to 3-2.
UCLA responded with three runs in the fifth inning started off on a RBI double to center field by Crawford to score freshman Blair Dunlap from second. Jensen followed with a RBI double down the right field line to score Crawford from second, and freshman Jermaine Curtis laced a two-out single down the right field line to score Jensen and put UCLA up 6-2.
Long Beach State cut the UCLA lead to 6-3 on a RBI single by Espinosa through the right side with two outs in the fifth inning, but would not get any closer than that.
The Dirtbags were 5-0 at home entering Tuesday's game with the Bruins.
UCLA will travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a three-game series with NC State beginning Friday, March 3.
