Feb. 28, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Andrea Duran has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 22-28, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Selma, Calif., native led the Bruins with a .400 batting average, five runs scored, six hits (6-for-15), three doubles and four RBI in UCLA's sweep through the Palm Springs Classic and win over UC Riverside last week. She also belted a home run, drew three walks, hit a sacrifice fly and notched an .800 slugging percentage.
Duran made the difference in the game at UC Riverside, going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and both RBI in the Bruins' 2-0 win over the Highlanders. She accounted for two of UCLA's three hits in that game.
For the second time this season, Duran led off a game with a home run against Ohio State to give the Bruins a lead in the bottom of the first inning. Against No. 19 LSU, Duran led off with a single, stole second base and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the first inning. She would later come across the plate for an insurance run in the sixth inning, scoring on a home run by Emily Zaplotsch.
She had a hit against Kansas in Saturday's first game, then doubled home a run against No. 8 Texas A&M in the nightcap. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning of a scoreless game against No. 10 Oklahoma on Sunday, Duran drew a walk, setting up Krista Colburn for the game-winning RBI.
Duran was a 2005 first team All-Pac-10 selection and a third team Easton All-American.
UCLA (13-1), hosts the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament this weekend, and will face in-state rivals Cal Poly, San Jose State and Santa Clara.
This is Duran's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's 88th weekly honor all-time.
