Washington's Lentz, Stanford's Stringer Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week.
Feb. 28, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON sophomore utility player Andy Lentz has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and STANFORD sophomore right-handed pitcher David Stringer has been named Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 21-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Lentz, from Woodinville, Wash., went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate with a double, three home runs, three RBI, six runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases in the Huskies' 3-0 sweep over Gonzaga. He hit his first solo homer to lead off the sixth inning in Washington's 14-4 home-opening victory vs. the Bulldogs. On Saturday, the sophomore hit two home runs and a double on Saturday to help UW in its 8-6 win. This season, Lentz has already seen action at first base, third base, center field, right field and designated hitter.
Stringer, from Palo Alto, Calif., made his first collegiate start Tuesday against Nevada, earning his first victory at Stanford. He took a one-hitter into the sixth and faced the minimum number of Wolf Pack batters through the first five innings. The one batter who had a hit was erased on a double play. In Sunday's rubber game at Fresno State, Stringer came in to start the fifth inning and shut out the Bulldogs, giving up just four hits and walking one to finish the game and earn the victory. For the week, Stringer went 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA, striking out 15. He allowed just one earned run, walked only one, and gave up seven hits as his opponents from the WAC hit only .189 against him.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Lentz's career, while it is the 49th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is also the first for Stringer, and the 70th selection all-time for Stanford.
