Mellouli Wins Pac-10 Title In 500-Yard Free
March 2, 2006
USC senior Ous Mellouli won his third consecutive conference crown in the 500y free to highlight USC's efforts on the second day of the 2006 Men's Pac-10 Swimming Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center on Thursday (March 2) in Federal Way, Wash.
Stanford leads with 320 points midway through the meet. Cal is second (265) and is followed by Arizona (191), USC (165), Arizona State (124) and Washington (58).
Mellouli won in 4:14.21, turning an even race with a couple hundred yards to go into a win going away. Cal's Domin Meichtry took second (4:15.89). The senior from Tunisia's win was not only his third in a row, but the sixth in a row by a USC swimmer in the Pac-10 event. He became the first swimmer to win the event three straight times since South African Olympian and former Arizona swimmer Ryk Neethling did it from 1998-2000. The only other person to do it was former Trojan Roy Saari (1964-66).
Junior Larsen also reached the final of the 500y free, finishing eighth (4:23.26).
FOX Sports West 2 will broadcast a one-hour recap of the meet at 3 p.m. PST on March 11. It will air again on FOX Sports West on March 12 at 12 p.m. Refer to your local cable or satellite TV guide for further information.
