Cougars Fall to Oregon State in First Round of Pac-10 Tournament
March 3, 2006
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Washington State junior Kate Benz tallied her 15th double-digit scoring effort of the season as Oregon State defeated the Cougars 77-38 in the first-round of the 2006 Pacific-10 Conference Tournament at HP Pavilion.
Benz lead WSU (8-20) with 10 points recording her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game and bringing her career total in that category to 39. Benz, the conference leader in rebounding, also grabbed seven boards to increase her career total to 696 rebounds, fourth all-time in school history.
Oregon State (15-13) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the WSU opened the game missing its first six field goal attempts. Amanda DuRocher ended the Cougars' drought at the 16:05 mark with a trey from the top of the arc.
WSU pulled to within five (12-7) with 11:15 remaining in the half before the Beavers completed the remainder of the half with a 22-8 run to go into the break with a 34-15 advantage.
Washington State opened the second half with senior Keisha Moore scoring on consecutive possessions to cut the Beavers' lead to 15, but that was close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way.
DuRocher would finish with nine points recording her 50th 3-point field goal of the season late in the second half. Fellow freshman Katie Appleton also notched her 50th trey of the year as the duo combined for the most freshman 3-point field goals made in a season, placing them sixth on the Cougars' all-time single-season list.
The Beavers were led by senior Anita Rivera with a career-high 27 points. Junior Kasey Nash added 16 points for OSU while senior Mandy Close tallied 14.
WSU finished the night shooting at a 20.3 percent clip (12-of-59), a Pac-10 Tournament low. Conversely, Oregon State shot nearly 50 percent from the field (27-of-55).
'When you shoot as poorly as you do, you know defense is what you have to rely on and unfortunately, the defense wasn't there tonight,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said.
