O'Neil Takes Second in 200 Fly Prelim at Pac-10s

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - California junior Patrick O'Neil took second place in the 200-yard butterfly in Saturday's preliminaries at the Pac-10 Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center. Third-ranked Cal qualified a total of eight Golden Bears for tonight's A finals, which will conclude the conference meet. Cal is in second place, behind Stanford, after 14 events at Pac-10s.
O'Neil, who swam a provisional NCAA B qualifying time of 1:46.26, finished behind USC's Viktor Bodrogi, who swam a 1:44.20.
Bears senior Henrique Barbosa swam a provisional NCAA B qualifying time of (1:58.31) and junior teammate Graham Lenz tied for fifth (1:59.79, NCAA B) in the 200 breaststroke, which was won by Stanford's Paul Kornfeld (1:55.74).
Sophomore Louis Vayo had Cal's best finish in the 200 backstroke, swimming a personal record 1:44.85 (NCAA B) to take fifth. Bears finished 5-6-7-8 in the race, with sophomore Mark Eckert sixth (PR 1:45.45, NCAA B), freshman David Russell seventh (1:46.91, NCAA B) and senior Chris Gibson eighth (1:47.10, NCAA B). Stanford's Hongzhe Sun won the race (1:41.49).
Cal sophomore William Copeland was sixth with a PR of 43.82 (NCAA B) in the 100 freestyle. Senior teammate Milorad Cavic was ninth (44.07, NCAA B). The race also featured the second tie of the Pac-10 Championships between Bears senior Matt Lyon and junior teammate Jonas Tilly, who each swam a 44.12 (NCAA B) to tie for 10th. The two Bears also tied for sixth place (19.78) in the 50 free prelim on Thursday. Stanford's Ben Wildman-Tobriner won the 100 free (42.98).
At 4:20 p.m., the conference championships will begin with the finals of the 1650 freestyle, which will take two heats, the 200 backstroke, the 100 free, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 fly and the 400-free relay. Also, the platform results from last week's Pac-10 Diving Championships will be factored into the scoring.
