USC Outslugs Georgia, 12-11, To Win Series

LOS ANGELES --- Matt Cusick, Cyle Hankerd and Lucas Duda delivered big days at the plate Saturday as the USC Trojans defeated the Georgia Bulldogs, 12-11, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. USC took two of three games from a Georgia squad ranked 20th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and 23rd by ESPN/USA Today Sports Weekly.
The Trojans (10-8) were down 8-2 before scoring four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth. USC held on as Paul Koss pitched in the ninth to get his second save of the season against the Bulldogs (7-2).
Cusick went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and four RBI while Hankerd and Duda each homered. Hankerd went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Duda was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Shawn Olsen (2-1) got the win for the Trojans with 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Redshirt freshman John Dunn (Torrance/West HS) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings and has not been charged with a run in his last 16 2/3 innings.
Georgia got home runs from Josh Morris, Kyle Keen and Gordon Beckham. Morris went 2-for-5 with three RBI while Ryan Peisel went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs knocked out USC starter Tommy Milone, who allowed eight runs (seven earned) in three innings with a strong wind blowing to right field.
Down 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Daniel Perales led off with a single. Josh Fogel singled and Duda followed with a double to center, scoring Perales. Hector Estrella hit an RBI single to right and Darin Vieira was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Blake Sharpe singled to right and a Cusick fielder's choice scored another run.
Duda tied the game in the fifth with his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to right. Cusick later added a two-run double, followed by Hankerd's fourth homer of the season to left.
USC hosts UC Irvine on Tuesday (March 7) at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with the video webcast courtesy of College Sports' All-Access.
