Washington Suffers a Heartbreaking Defeat to the San Diego State Aztecs

SEATTLE, WA - The No. 38 Washington women's tennis team lost their sixth consecutive match to No. 54 San Diego State, 5-2. The match was tight until the finish where the Aztec's were able to close the Huskies out in two three-set victories. The competition took place in UW's Nordstrom Tennis Center in front of a spirited home crowd.
In doubles action the Huskies were forced to fight from behind due to an early loss coming in the second doubles position. Tara Simpson and Monika Kolbovic were overmatched playing number two doubles, losing to the Aztec's Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova 8-1. Washington's number one doubles team of Dinka Hadzic and Victoria Brymer defeated their opponents Dita Hauerlandova and Sisse Nielsen 8-4. Hadzic and Brymer rallied off four straight games with the match tied at four all to take the set and the match. In the third doubles spot UW's Stephanie Svandeldt and Melinda Wong were up 7-4, but allowed their opponents, Milana Yusupova and Esther Cadua, to string off five straight games, giving SDSU the match and the first team point in a 9-7 decision.
The Aztecs continued with their momentum from doubles onto the singles court, taking home two quick matches. In the fifth singles position, Melinda Wong exchanged serve with her opponent until SDSU's Sisse Nielsen was able to win 11 straight games defeating Wong in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. In number six singles Kolbovic was only able to take one game off of the Aztec's Cadua dropping the match 6-0, 6-1. With the Huskies down 3-0 in the team scores, sophomore Stephanie Svanfeldt won the first team point for UW in the second singles spot. Brymer defeated SDSU's Milana Yusupov 6-2, 6-2.
Team captain Dinka Hadzic was able to prevail over the Aztec's Dita Hauerlandova in the first singles position. Hadzic was down a break in the first set but was able to fight back and win the set and the match 6-4, 6-3. San Diego State clinched the match in the number three singles, where the Aztec's Eliska Krausova defeated UW's Tara Simpson 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. In the final match of the day freshman Victoria Brymer jumped out to a one set lead over her opponent, Alesya Vidov. Vidov regained her composure and took the next two consecutive sets to win the fifth team point for the Aztecs 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
In the Huskies next debut No. 38 UW will take on the No. 64 San Diego Toreros. The match will occur on Washington's home courts in the Nordstrom Indoor Tennis Center on March 5 at 12:00pm. The Huskies hold a 10-5 advantage over the Torero's in the all-time series between the two opponents.
