Softball Sweeps Santa Clara on Final Day of Winsberg Tournament

LOS ANGELES - UCLA finished a 6-0 weekend at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon with 8-1 and 8-1 victories over Santa Clara. The Bruins (19-1) were led offensively by Krista Colburn who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI on the day.
The Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament is set up as a straight double round-robin with each team playing a doubleheader against each opponent. UCLA went undefeated with a 6-0 record in Tournament play. Cal Poly was second with a 3-3 record, Santa Clara was third at 2-3 and San Jose State was fourth at 0-6.
Game 1: Cal Poly 7, San Jose State 4
Cal Poly pounded out 10 hits and held off a late rally by San Jose State to win the opening game of the day by a 7-4 margin. Lisa Modglin and Sarah Iwata both had multiple hits for the Mustangs with Modglin going 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while Iwata was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Brittany McConnell had a fourth inning home run for San Jose State, one of the Spartans six hits.
Game 2: Cal Poly 5, San Jose State 5
San Jose State sprinted out to an early 4-0 lead in the second game of the day's opening doubleheader, but Cal Poly would respond with three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. A one-out solo home run in the top of the sixth inning gave San Jose State the lead once again, but the Mustangs would come back to plate two runners in the bottom of the sixth for the victory. The teams combined for 19 hits and 11 runs in the contest.
Game 3: UCLA 8, Santa Clara 2
UCLA scored one run in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third to take an early 6-0 lead over Santa Clara in the third game of the day at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
A Lisa Dodd walk started a two-out rally in the first and she would come around to score on a Jodie Legaspi single to give the Bruins the early lead. In the second, Dodd singled home two runs to increase the lead to 3-0.
Santa Clara would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth but UCLA put two more on the board in the fifth inning with a solo leadoff home run from Ashley Herrera and an RBI double from Krista Colburn to complete the scoring with an 8-2 UCLA lead. Lisa Dodd picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle, striking out four.
UCLA opened the scoring in the third inning with three runs on an RBI single from Zaplatosch and a two-run home run by Legaspi. Another run came across in the top of the fourth on a Colburn double to push the lead to 4-0.
With a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth, UCLA plated another run on an RBI single from Dodd and UCLA added three insurance runs in the seventh inning on an RBI walk by Tara Henry. Colburn would add another bases-loaded walk before Emily Zaplatosch had another RBI single, completing the scoring with an 8-1 UCLA lead.
The Bruins return to action with a single game on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at Easton Stadium against Cal State Fullerton.
