Men's Tennis Falters Against Northwestern in a 5-2 Loss.

March 6, 2006

Tempe, Ariz. - The Arizona State Men's Tennis Team fell to the #57 Northwestern Wildcats Monday afternoon as they lost in a 5-2 decision to send their record to 5-5 on the season, as the Wildcats move to 7-7.

The match-up between the Devils and the Wildcats was a late-addition to the schedule as it was added to make up for a match set up against Tulane before Tulane's Men's Tennis Team was forced to cancel their season due to Hurricane Katrina.

The Devils went into Monday's match leading the series history between the two teams 1-0, but the `Cats stepped up to tie it 1-1 Monday afternoon.

The Devils seemed to be unable to regain their usual composure on the court Monday as the match started off with Northwestern sweeping doubles from ASU.

In the one spot ASU's Jonathan Kinsella and Ryan Waits faced off against the #30 duo of NW's Adam Schaechterle and Matt Christian, but the `Cats were too much for Kinsella and Waits as they quickly fell 8-2.

Their fellow Devils T.J. Bellama and Mike Beatty also had no luck as Christian Tempke and Willy Lock defeated them 8-6 in the two-spot.

Wes Miller and Nick Hegarty gave a tough match in the three-spot against NW's Juan Gomez and Marc Dwyer, but the `Cats outlasted them in a 9-7 bout.

In singles, the Devils were unable to pull it together to get the win as they lost four of the six singles matches to the `Cats.

In the one-spot, Jonthan Kinsella faced off against Christian Tempke where Kinsella started off ahead and playing strong, but the `Cat fought back to take the match from Kinsella 7-6, 4-6 (1)6.

Christopher Biro was slated in the number two spot as he faced off against Willy Lock, though Lock quickly put the Devil away 6-2, 6-4.

ASU's Nick Hegarty stepped up to play NW's Juan Gomez in the three-spot where he came out to win the first set 6-2, though fell in the second 6-1 to the `Cat.

Hegarty came back strong in the third set though to put away Gomez as he won 6-4 giving ASU their first point on the day.

The Devils were shutdown in the fifth and sixth spots as well as Wes Miller and T.J. Bellama both fell to their Wildcat opponents in straight sets.

Ryan Waits came through for the Devils though as he took on Alexey Evstratenkov and beat the `Cat in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to give ASU their second and last point on the day.

The Devils fall to 5-5 on the season as they prepare to face Pac-10 foes, the #6 Stanford Cardinal on Friday, March 10 and the #16 California Bears on Saturday, March 11 at home at ASU's WhitemanTennisCenter.

The match versus Stanford is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. Friday with a start time of 1:00 p.m. for Saturday's match versus Cal.
