Cougars Soccer Tackles Spring Season
March 8, 2006
LAST TIME OUT: Washington State Soccer opened its spring season at the Women's 2006 NCAA Division I College Showcase March 4...showcase hosted by Walla Walla Community College with matches played at WWCC and Whitman College sites...event featured teams from Boise State, Gonzaga, Idaho and Montana...Cougars battled Gonzaga to a 0-0 tie in first match of showcase...WSU posted a 2-0 victory over Boise State in the closing contest.
HEAD COACH Matt Potter SAYS: 'With our injury situation and ability to practice as a team limited, we had some obvious concerns heading into the weekend and to come out of the weekend keeping two clean sheets and some good individual and collective performances, I was very pleased. The individual performances were `encouraging' with some great signs for the future. We asked players to adapt whether it was a positional challenge or style of play change and the response was very positive against two good programs. The battle against a good Gonzaga team was exciting to see and a game of few chances for both teams. I was pleased how we physically competed and individually pushed ourselves against Boise State. We began to possess the ball and created opportunities in front of goal. It's early, but already the industriousness of the group is being rewarded.'

COACH POTTER SAYS: 'The Spring season is an important time for every individual on the team. It's a time of personal improvement, a time of opportunity in regards to playing, and a time to establish and solidify yourself as a key team member. We can invest quality hours creating individual and game situations which allow individuals to mature and grow. It's a period whereby we can elevate the physical characteristics needed to be a 90-minute player and prepare them for a summer that has them literally racing towards the fall. As a team, we can build and spend time on lessons learned from the fall. We have work to do but the enthusiasm of the group to date has made this spring a fun time for the staff and, after last season, I know the group is hungry to go further than it has gone before.'
