UC Irvine Wins 10-9, 13-Inning Marathon
March 7, 2006
LOS ANGELES --- Bryan Peterson's sacrifice bunt scored pinch runner Matt Morris in the top of the 13th Tuesday as the UC Irvine Anteaters outlasted the USC Trojans, 10-9, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. The game lasted five hours and 24 minutes after the Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
Taylor Holiday went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and four RBI for the Anteaters (12-7). Justin LaTempa (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief while Kyle Necke picked up his second save with a 1-2-3 inning in the 13th.
Ryan Schlack (0-1) took the loss for USC, which fell to 10-9 on the season.
Holiday led off the game with a solo home run to center on the second pitch by USC starter Tommy Milone. USC answered with four runs in the second, led by Cusick's three-run homer to right. Spike McDougall hit a solo shot to left center in the fourth, cutting the Trojan lead to two. Sammy Donabedian and Gary Dudrey led off the UCI fifth with back-to-back singles. Holiday singled to left, plating Donabedian, and Ben Orloff's sacrifice bunt tied the game at four apiece.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the sixth with one out, but could not get a run across. UCI added a run in the seventh and exploded for four runs in the eighth, thanks in part to Holiday's two-run, bases-loaded double to left.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Trojans loaded the bases. Blake Sharpe walked to push across a run and Lucas Duda hit a two-run single up the middle off Erickson to make it a 9-8 UCI lead, before Erickson struck out Baron Frost with runners at first and second to end the threat.
Daniel Perales walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth for USC. A sacrifice moved him to second and a Darin Vieira groundout moved him to third. With a 2-2 count and two outs, pinch hitter Kyle Degener singled to left to send the game into extra frames.
USC will host No. 16 Stanford in a nonconference series this weekend, beginning on Friday (March 10) at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with the video webcast courtesy of College Sports' All-Access.
