Helvie Eighth on 1m-Board at NCAA Zone E

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - California freshman Sam Helvie took eighth place, with a score of 570.30, on the one-meter springboard final at the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional on Friday at Oklahoma City Community College. Cal sophomore teammate Javier Rivas was 15th, with a score of 507.75, and sophomore teammate Mark Wes was 20th, with a 208.70.

Arizona State senior All-American Joona Puhakka, the defending NCAA and NCAA Zone E champion on the one-meter board, won the title again on Friday. The Finnish Olympian, who won the three-meter title yesterday, scored 842.10 on the one-meter event.

Also yesterday, Helvie had Cal's best finish on the three-meter board, placing 14th with a score of 528.30.

The final day of the three-day event begins tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. CST, as the women's platform competition begins. The men's platform competition begins at 1:45 p.m. CST. At the end of the regional on Saturday, the top eight men's divers will qualify for the 83rd annual NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships March 23-25 in Atlanta, Ga.
