No. 34 USC Falls 5-1 To No. 7 Baylor

March 10, 2006

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 34-ranked USC men's tennis team followed up last week's match against defending NCAA champion UCLA with a nonconference clash against the 2005 NCAA runner-up, Baylor, on Friday afternoon at Mark Stadium. Against the No. 7 Bears, the Trojans lost 5-1 in singles play, as the teams opted to hold off on doubles action due to stormy skies. The weather held up, but the Baylor singles play reigned with three two-set wins before USC tacked up its lone win of the night thanks to the power of Dejan Cvetkovic at No. 1 singles. The Trojans are now 6-6 in dual match play this season.

Cvetkovic's 6-1, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles marked an upset victory for the sophomore, as he toppled #48 Matija Zgaga to USC on the board in the match. Jamil Al-Agba was bested by #5 Lars Poerschke at No. 2 singles; Kaes Van't Hof fell 6-2, 6-3 to Will Ward, and Adam Loucks dropped his No. 4 match with #52 Michal Kokta 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, freshman Chong Wang battled his opponent, #93 Vladimir Portnov into three sets, but was unable to pull ahead in the final frame, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. And at No. 6 singles, Jeff Kazarian fell 6-0, 7-5 to close out the nonconference action at USC.

USC next faces No. 4 Duke at 1:30 p.m. on Monday (March 13) at Marks Stadium.
