No. 5 USC Women Start Pac-10 Play Off Right With 6-0 Win Over Washington
March 10, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The fifth-ranked USC women's tennis team posted its first Pac-10 victory of the season with a 6-0 win over visiting Washington on Friday afternoon at Marks Stadium. Threatening skies prompted the teams to play out singles matches first, going to doubles play if necessary. But the Women of Troy took care of business during singles action and swept through the Huskies in straight sets for the 6-0 victory. USC improves to 9-1 overall and is 1-0 in Pac-10 play, while Washington moves to 1-8, 0-1.
Carine Vermeulen and Anca Anastasiu got the ball rolling for the Women of Troy with decisive wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively. Anastasiu didn't give up a single game on her way to the junior's eight straight dual match singles victory. Vermeulen dropped just one game in the second set to finish witha 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. Freshman Amanda Fink -- ranked No. 3 in the nation -- grabbed some serious momentum in her No. 2 match after losing the first game. Fink won 10 straight games to hold a 6-1, 4-0 lead in the match before her opponent, Victoria Brymer, was able to tally another point. Still, Fink stayed in control for a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Dianne Matias and Luana Magnani were the next Trojans to power through their Husky opponents, with Matias snagging the match-clinching victory in a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Magnani finished off her opopnent soon after with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4. That left the No. 1 singles players still battling, but #50 Lindsey Nelson blasted her way to victory with a powerful 6-2, 6-2 performance over Washington's #79 Dinka Hadzic to close out the match for the Women of Troy.
USC returns to action on Saturday when the Women of Troy host No. 73 Washington State at 1:30 p.m. at Mark Stadium.
