Huskies Down Ball State
March 11, 2006
FRESNO, Calif.-- A two-out, two-RBI single by Ashley Charters in the sixth inning, broke open a 4-4 tie game to lift 15th-ranked Washington (18-6) to the 6-4 victory over Ball State Saturday at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic. Washington's scheduled game vs. UCF tonight at 5 p.m. has been cancelled due to rain.
The Huskies scored three runs vs. Ball State in the first inning on two hits. Dominique Lastrapes reached base on a throwing error by the short stop and promptly stole second base. Charters then hit a seeing-eye double into shallow left field to score Lastrapes. Sarah Hyatt followed with a two-run home run to right-centerfield, marking her fourth home run of the season and third this weekend.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits. Sarah McGregor singled to the shortstop and scored when Taylor Yancey doubled to left-centerfield. Abby Gross followed with a double to deep centerfield to score Yancey and cut Washington's lead to 3-2.
Washington manufactured one run in the third inning on just one hit. Dena Tyson drew a leadoff walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Jacki Hansen. Hansen moved to second on a ground out and took third base on a wild pitch. Lauren Greer then laced a single into right field to score Hansen and give UW the 4-2 lead.
Ball State knotted the score at 4-4 with two runs in the fourth. Freshman pitcher Danielle Lawrie struck out the first two batters before giving up a single to Cortney Patteson. Amanda Graeter then belted a home run over the left field fence, marking just the second home run by the Cardinals this season, to tie the game.
The Huskies battled back with two runs on two hits in the sixth to regain the lead and held on for the 6-4 victory. Senior Aimee Minor led off the frame with a single to left field, followed by a walk to Koziol. Minor and Koziol moved up one base on a UW ground out before both scored on a bunt by Charters. Minor scored easily on the play and good hustle by Koziol allowed her to catch BSU off guard as the Cardinals didn't attempt a play at the plate.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the seventh with a walk, an error and a hit batsmen but a pop-up to Lastrapes at second base ended the game.
Lawrie (11-3) earned the win as she allowed four runs on six hits and struck out 13. Abby Zollman (0-1) took the loss as she allowed four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Washington will round out the Bulldog Classic Sunday with a 1 p.m. game vs. tournament host and #25 Fresno State. The game will be broadcast live on KKNW-1150 AM and can be accessed at www.gohuskies.com or www.newschannel1150AM.com.
