No. 5 Cardinal Downs MTSU, 13-1

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford, Calif. - No. 5 Stanford Softball (20-4) downed Middle Tennessee State, 13-1, in the first of two games today at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith tallied four RBIs as the Cardinal collected 15 hits. Senior pitcher Laura Severson nabbed her fourth win of the season, striking out three batters in four innings.
Stanford jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Senior centerfielder Catalina Morris got the hitting started with a double down the right line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior infielder Lauren Lappin knocked Morris home with a single up the middle. Junior leftfielder Jackie Rinehart followed with a single to right field, advancing freshman Maddy Coon who reached on an error and scoring Lappin from second base. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe stepped up and hit a two RBI single to left field to score Coon and Rinehart. Howe later scored off of a single up the middle by freshman Missy Penna and Stanford ended the top of the first inning ahead, 5-0.
The Cardinal put up two more runs in the second inning. Coon was walked on base and junior outfielder Anna Beardman reached with a single up the middle. Both runners scored on a double by Smith down the left line and Stanford remained in the lead, 7-0.
In the top of the fourth, Morris scored her second run of the day on a double by Coon to left field. Coon and Lappin later scored on a two RBI single by Smith. The Cardinal put three more runs away in the top of the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Shoney Hixson doubled to left field, scoring sophomore Tricia Aggabao who was walked on base. Junior infielder Lindsay Key came home on a base hit by Morris to right field. Hixson then scored her fourth run of the season on a sacrifice fly by Lappin.
The Blue Raiders scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as junior Trish White hit a walk off home run. Stanford ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, 13-1.
Severson improved to 4-0 in the circle, striking out three batters in four innings and allowing only three hits. Sophomore Lauren Nydam entered the circle for the final inning, walking none and allowing one hit.
Smith was 2-4 at the plate against MTSU with four RBIs, while Morris was 3-4 with two runs and one RBI. Howe was also 2-2 with one run and two RBIs and Lappin was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
The Cardinal will play its second game today against BYU, scheduled for 3:00 pm.
