No. 8 Cal Falls to No. 1 Stanford, 6-1
March 11, 2006
BERKELEY - The eighth-ranked California women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Stanford, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Hellman Tennis Center, recording its first home court loss of the season. The Bears fall to 10-4 overall, while the Cardinal remains undefeated at 15-0.
'We came out on one and two doubles and didn't play within our game,' said head coach Jan Brogan. 'We calmed down and played within our game in singles. We have pushed Stanford more than any other team and we will just get more confident in the next month and a half.'
Cal dropped the doubles point, losing matches in the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions. Top-ranked duo Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey defeated 19th-ranked Suzi Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor, 8-3. Also falling to the Cardinal was Cal's Marion Ravelojaona and Claire Ilcinkas, as well as Cristina Visico and Bojana Bobusic.
On the singles court, the Bears tallied one victory over Stanford and took the Cardinal to three sets in half the matches. Sophomore Suzi Babos, who is currently ranked No. 29 in singles play, upset fifth-ranked Alice Barnes playing in the No. 2 position. Babos held Barnes to three games, but won the tiebreaker 11-9.
'Babos is getting back to her dominating style,' said Brogan.
In other singles action, No. 9 Fodor was upset by No. 15 Amber Liu, 6-3, 6-4. Ilcinkas, a freshman, took 49th-ranked Whitney Deason to three sets, but lost the tiebreaker 10-4. Cal dropped three other matches to ranked opponents.
The Bears return to action in two weeks when they travel to Texas to face TCU on Tuesday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. Cal then takes on Baylor on Wednesday, March 29, at 5:00 p.m.
