Stanford Men To Host Virginia In Opening Round Of NIT

Stanford, Calif. - At its meeting in Indianapolis from March 9-12, the NIT Selection Committee chose the 2006 NIT 40-team field, culminating with the release of the tournament bracket on March 12. Four number one seeds were chosen to lead the four corners of the bracket. The number one seeds included Louisville, Cincinnati, Michigan and Maryland.
The Postseason NIT will tip off on March 14 with opening-round play on campus sites. Second-round action commences on March 17 and the quarterfinals begin on March 21.
Stanford (15-13), a seven-seed, will host Virginia (15-14), an eighth seed, on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. PT in the opening round. The winner will advance to play Missouri State (20-8) on March 17. The Cardinal are making their fifth NIT appearance and first since 1993-94. Stanford has won the NIT once in 1990-91.
The Cardinal are 3-1 against Virginia in the series and have won the last two. Stanford is 2-0 versus the Cavaliers at home.
Tickets will be available beginning at 8 p.m. on Sunday at www.gostanford.com. Lower Level Reserved will be $20 and Upper Level General Admission will be $12 ($8 Child/Sr).
Continuing with a tradition now in its 69th year, the championship round will take place in New York's Madison Square Garden with the semifinal doubleheader on March 28 and the championship game on March 30.
The selection committee, all former Division I men's basketball head coaches, is comprised of Hall of Famers Newton and Dean Smith, along with Don DeVoe, Reggie Minton, Jack Powers, and Carroll Williams.
