March 14, 2006
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA softball team capitalized on 11 hits, five for extra bases, as the third-ranked Bruins defeated UNLV by a score of 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Easton Stadium. The Bruins (25-1) were led offensively by Jodie Legaspi, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, and by Lisa Dodd who struck out seven batters en route to her 12th pitching victory of the year and belted a sixth-inning grand slam home run in the win.
UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Krista Colburn hit a one-out home run to left field to score the first run of the game. Caitlin Benyi followed with a double to left and came around to score on the seventh home run of the season by Jodie Legaspi to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Bruins added two runs on an RBI single from Whitney Holum in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. UNLV followed with a four run inning in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kendall Fearn.
In the bottom of the sixth, UCLA came back with a vengeance. The Bruins opened with a one-out slap-hit infield single from Tara Henry, who scored from first base on a double by Andrea Duran. Caitlin Benyi would then draw a one-out walk and Duran stole third base, giving Emily Zaplatosch runners on the corners. She connected on a single through the left side, plating Duran and leaving runners on first and second. Legaspi followed with a single to shallow left, loading the bases for Dodd, who took a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for her fifth home run of the year.
Dodd finished the game in the circle in the top of the seventh, recording her sixth and seventh strikeouts on the day to complete her 12th win of the season.
The third-ranked Bruins return to action on Wednesday night against No. 9 Michigan. The game is scheduled for a 6:05 pm PT first pitch and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins and Lisa Fernandez calling the action.
