Caverly, Bishop And 400 Medley Relay Qualify For Championship Finals

Athens, Ga. - Brooke Bishop (50 free), Kristen Caverly (200 IM) and Stanford's 400 medley relay team qualified for the evening championship finals during opening day prelim action Thursday at the 2006 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Stanford's 200 free relay squad reached the consolation finals for the short-course yards meet being held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Bishop clocked a personal-best 50 free time of 22.32 to qualify fifth and move up three spots to No. 3 on Stanford's all-time list of top performers in the event.
Caverly finished the 200 IM in 1:58.95 to also qualify fifth and fall just shy of her top collegiate and season-best time of 1:58.54 she swam to win the 2006 Pac-10 Championships.
The 400 medley relay squad of Bishop, Caverly, Dana Kirk and Madeline Rovira finished sixth in a season-best time of 3:37.48, jumping up four places from a No. 10 seeding. The foursome swam 1.89 seconds faster than the same group's previous season-best mark of 3:39.37 to finish fourth at the Pac-10 Championships. Bishop opened the race with a career-best 53.63 for the 100 back, moving up to No. 5 on the list of Stanford's all-time top performers in the event.
Stanford reached the consolation finals in the 200 free relay that opened the day's action when Rovira, Bishop, Desiree Stahley and Kirk finished in a season-best time of 1:31.09 to finish ninth, missing a spot in the championship finals by .15 seconds to eighth-place finisher Texas A&M.
Rovira swam a pair of identical personal-best time of 23.20 in her opening leg of the 200 free relay and the 50 free to winning the first heat of the event and finish 41st overall, cutting in half the No. 82 seed she entered the race with as the final qualifier in the event. Rovira knocked .21 seconds of her previous 50 free personal-best.
Top individual qualifiers in Thursday's prelims were Auburn's Adrienne Binder (500 free, 4:40.39), Arizona's Whitney Myers (200 IM, 1:57.19) and Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce (50 free, pool record 21.73).
Georgia (Joyce, Tricia Harm, Anna Miller, Jessica Cole) was the top qualifier in the 200 free relay with a pool record time of 1:28.74, while USC (Hayley McGregory, Rebecca Soni, Kristen Lahey, Rhiannon Jeffrey) checked in with a time of 3:35.44 to earn the top spot in the 400 medley relay prelims.
