Gardner Secures All-America Honors

Stanford, Calif. - Tanner Gardner secured his first All-America honors today after winning three-straight matches in the consolation bracket. He will face eighth-seeded John Velez of Northwestern for seventh place tomorrow morning.
Gardner, who was knocked out of the main bracket by fifth-seeded Troy Nickerson yesterday (who advanced to the championship today), won his first three bouts today to earn his first All-America honors. Gardner posted a 12-2 major decision over Fresno State's Cory Borges in his first wrestleback match and edged Northern Illinois' Patrick Castillo, 5-4. In the fifth round, Gardner upended Central Michigan's 11th-seeded Luke Smith, 14-5 to advance to the consolation quarterfinals and secure All-America recognition. Sixth-seeded Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State ended Gardner's run, but the Cardinal co-captain will now compete for seventh place tomorrow.
The final bouts of the consolation bracket will begin Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (CT).
