Stith, Velasquez Advance to Semifinals, Earn All-America Honors

March 17, 2006

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The end of the third session of competition at the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships Friday afternoon in Oklahoma City, Okla., brought about mixed results for members of the Arizona State University wrestling team as two Sun Devils advanced to the semifinals as All-Americans while three remain in contention and one was eliminated. As a team, the Sun Devils have scored 38.5 points and are tied with Hofstra for seventh place while Oklahoma State continues to lead with 76.

Brian Stith, the 10th seed at 157 pounds, and Cain Velasquez, the fourth seed at heavyweight, attained All-America honors for the second year in a row as both won their quarterfinal bouts to reach the semifinals later Friday night. Both men scored major decision victories over their foes with Stith handing down an 8-0 defeat to Andrew Flanagan of Harvard and Velasquez scoring a 9-1 defeat of Kirk Nail of Ohio State.

Stith will now meet 11th seeded Derek Zinck of Lehigh for a spot in the finals of a bracket filled with upsets as the Nos. 2, 4 and 12 wrestlers have all been eliminated and will not earn All-America honors. With a victory by Stith over Zinck and a win by No. 5 Ben Cherrington of Boise State over No. 9 Joe Johnston of Iowa, the weight class could feature a Pac-10 Championship final rematch.

Velasquez made his way through a bracket the went almost as planned with all four top seeds making the semifinal field. Velasquez will now take on top-seeded Cole Konrad of Minnesota in one semifinal while No. 2 Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State meets No. 3 Greg Wagner of Michigan for the second spot in the finals. With a 37-5 record on the season, Velasquez will now look to avenge earlier losses as he has fallen to Konrad once this season, 3-2, with his other losses coming at the hands of the other two semifinalists (two each).

Two other Sun Devils competed in the championship quarterfinals, but did not fare as well with both No. 10 C.B. Dollaway (184) and No. 8 Ryan Bader (197) falling. Dollaway dropped a 7-4 decision to No. 2 Roger Kish of Minnesota while Bader sustained a 10-7 defeat at the hands of the tournament's hottest competitor, Chris Weidman of Hofstra, who earlier upended the top-ranked competitor at 197. Dollaway and Bader now must win their next bouts to not only remain in the tournament, but also earn All-America honors. Dollaway will face unseeded Paul Bradley of Iowa while Bader will take on unseeded Nathan Moore of Purdue.

Also in need of one more win for All-America status is No. 10 Patrick Pitsch (165). After dropping his first bout of the tournament, Pitsch has won his last three bouts to remain in contention. Following his win Thursday night in the consolation round, Pitsch defeated fourth-seeded Nick Baima of Northern Iowa by injury default at 5:00 before scoring a 7-2 decision over Larry Hall of West Virginia. Pitsch now faces Deonte Penn of Edinboro with the winner earning All-America honors and the loser being eliminated from the event.

The Sun Devils lost their first entrant of the tournament as seventh-seeded Jeremy Mendoza (125) sustained a tough 6-4 overtime loss to fourth-seeded Kyle Ott of Illinois in the consolation draw. Mendoza went 1-2 on the weekend and finished his senior season with a 33-5 overall record.

The championship semifinals, along with the consolation fifth round and consolation quarterfinals, will be held Friday night.
