Between The Bars
March 18, 2006
I've received quite a few questions regarding the status of our team, so here's a short update:
Tasha and I spoke quite a while ago about whether she should redshirt this season or not. Her first response was, 'I've accomplished a lot in my gymnastics career. College is all about TEAM, and I want to offer my team whatever I can this season.' I thought that was an awesome and impressive response. She has done a tremendous job getting in great shape these past few months. She's actually a lot faster and more powerful than she was before her surgery. It's just a matter of getting her basic skills back to be able to compete 10.0 start value routines.
She wasn't slated to compete beam until next week at Pac-10's, but with Janelle staying home because of the flu, we decided to compete Tasha. Skill-wise she was ready, but she could have used a few more routines under her belt. She forgot the full turn before her dismount, which dropped her start value to a 9.8. Plus, her round-off for her dismount was crooked, so she ended up with a large stumble out of her double full. When she finished her routine she came up to me and said, 'A-ha, Miss Val; this is why you wanted me to compete before Pac-10's.' She's looking and feeling great.
Melissa Chan came in on bars for us and hit a nice routine with a huge double front dismount. She's on the mend as well from her calf strain from a few weeks ago. Hopefully, she can come in on bars and beam for us next weekend.
Janelle is feeling better - she's had a horrible case of the flu that has lasted two full weeks. Hopefully, she'll be back this week.
All in all, we are getting more healthy. It's exciting having more of our athletes back in the competitive line-up.Congratulations to Ashley Peckett who competed in the all-around last night for the first time since January of 2005.
We're excited for the Championship season to start. Our potential is right there on the surface waiting to bust out. All of the experience our entire roster has gotten this season should prove for an exciting next 4 meets for us.
