Wrestling Sits Sixth Behind Three Top 7 Finishers

March 18, 2006

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Three outstanding seniors on the Arizona State University wrestling team closed out their collegiate careers Saturday at the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships as each placed in the Top 7 of their respective weight classes to pace the Sun Devils to 61.5 points and sixth place in the team race at the tournament being conducted at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. C.B. Dollaway, Ryan Bader and Cain Velasquez placed fifth, seventh and fourth, respectively, in their final tournaments in which they earned All-America honors.

At 184 pounds, 10th-seeded Dollaway opened the day with a tough loss by fall in the consolation semifinals to top-seeded Josh Glenn (American) at 2:44 into the bout. Dollaway rebounded nicely though, as he scored his third upset of the tournament by knocking off fourth-seeded Joseph Mazzurco of Cornell, 6-1, to place fifth in the tournament.

Bader, seeded eighth, competed in just one bout and made it count as he upset top-ranked Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan, 5-3, to finish seventh overall. Bader capped his career with 120 career wins, the eighth-most in school history, and was a two-time All-American following his fourth-place showing as a sophomore.

Velasquez saw his attempt at revenge fall short once again in the consolation bracket as he absorbed a 9-1 major decision loss to third-seeded Greg Wagner of Michigan in the third-place bout. Velasquez, who was seeded fourth in the event, placed fourth after opening the day with a 5-1 defeat of fifth-seeded Bode Ogunwole of Harvard. Cain finished his career with an 88-19 record as 17 of those losses came to the men that finished ahead of him in this year's tournament.

Brian Stith (157) is the lone Sun Devil remaining in the competition and will take to the mat tonight as he battles conference foe Ben Cherrington of Boise State for the national title. The finals are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. CST and can be seen live on ESPN (5:30 p.m. Arizona time).
