Cougar Tennis Splits at Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -The Washington State women's tennis team split its matches, Sunday at the Newport Beach Tournament. The Cougars took on No. 57 Ohio State but fell to the Buckeyes, 4-2. WSU then battled No. 75 Loyola Marymount and defeated the Lions, 4-0. The Cougars are currently ranked No. 71 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Cougars are 9-8 on the year.

Against Ohio State, sophomore Ekaterina Burduli continued her winning streak by defeating Caitlin O'Keefe, 6-4, 6-1. The win improves Burduli's record to 10-6 in dual match play. In Burduli's afternoon match, she was leading LMU's Pavla Mesterova, 6-4, 2-1 but the match was not finished.

Junior transfer Marjolein van de Ven continued her winning ways by defeating OSU's Ciara Finucane, 6-3, 6-3 and then cruised past Maja Sundac of LMU, 6-2, 6-0. The Delft, Netherlands native leads the Cougars with 19 wins.

WSU head coach Lisa Hart was pleased with the play of the Cougars.

'We came out and played hard in both matches,' Hart said. 'We now have to get ready to finish the remaining games of our season.'

The Cougars will be back on the Courts, March 24 for another doubleheader against Lewis-Clark State and Montana State. WSU will take on MSU at 11 a.m. and LSC at 4 p.m. both matches are scheduled to be played at Pullman, Wash.
