March 19, 2006
Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team earned its first three-game series sweep at home in five years with a 9-1 win over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins have won 10 of their last 12 games and improve to 15-11 on the season, while San Diego State falls to 6-20.
Junior Tim Stewart led the way for the Bruins going 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and a home run, and senior Chris Jensen went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and a RBI. Junior Hector Ambriz was 2-for-5 with a two-run double.
Junior Tyson Brummett (4-3) earned the win going 7.0 innings with five strikeouts, allowing just one run on five hits.
UCLA took advantage of some Aztec errors to scrap for a run in the second inning and grab a 1-0 lead. Ambriz led the inning off with a bloop single to left center, and Stewart followed with a double down the left field line to give UCLA runners at second and third. Senior Sean Smith then hit a dribbler to San Diego State starter Will Miller who fumbled the play allowing Smith to reach first and load the bases. Freshman Jermaine Curtis hit a ground ball to third baseman Lance Zawadzki who tagged the bag to force Stewart out and caught Ambriz in a rundown for the second out. Senior Josh Roenicke followed with another ground ball to Zawadzki who threw it away at first base to score Smith from second base.
The Bruins got three more runs in the third inning to go up 4-0. Freshman Blair Dunlap walked with one out as Jensen followed with a RBI double to left center to score him. Stewart drilled a two-run home run to left center with two outs to score Jensen and put UCLA up by four. Stewart's home run extends the Bruins' long ball streak to 13-consecutive games.
San Diego State got on the board in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice with runners on first and third to cut the UCLA lead to 4-1.
The Bruins added another run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-1. Jensen doubled to left center to lead off the innings, and Smith doubled to center field to drive him in.
UCLA put four more runs on the board in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Crawford to score Curtis from third, an RBI single by Dunlap that scored Roenicke from second with two outs, and a two-run double by Ambriz to left field with two outs to put UCLA up for good at 9-1.
UCLA will have a week off before playing at UC Riverside on Tuesday, March 28.
