March 21, 2006
BERKELEY - The No. 6/7 California softball team held on for an 8-7 win against the Chinese National Team, Tuesday, at Levine-Fricke Field.
In the 2004 Olympics, China finished fourth after being eliminated by Japan in the semifinals. Team USA won the gold, Australia the silver and Japan the bronze.
On Tuesday, senior Haley Woods led the Bears, finishing 3-for-5 on the day, including a home run and three RBI. Senior Kristina Thorson led the way defensively, holding China scoreless over the four innings she pitched.
Cal got on the board early, scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning. Woods homered, scoring freshman Morgan Siegel, who reached base on a fielder's choice. Senior Emily Friedman doubled later in the inning, sending sophomore Chloe Kloezeman home. Kloezeman also reached base on a double. Junior Alex Sutton scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball. She walked to reach base.
China scored one run in the fifth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. The exhibition game was nine full innings, giving both teams the chance to gain game experience. The game does not count towards Cal's overall record or season statistics.
The Golden Bears (24-2) open Pac-10 play next weekend. They travel to the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. later this week.
