No. 2 Cal Looks To Defend Three Consecutive Windermere Crew Classic Titles

This Week: The California Golden Bears will face four crew teams ranked in the Top 20 of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll March 25 at the Windermere Crew Classic. Against a field that includes 2005 NCAA silver medalist, Virginia, The Bears try to repeat their stand out performance from the past three years. Cal will use the Windermere to prepare for the upcoming San Diego Crew Classic, April 1-2, 2006.
'This weekend should be a lot of fun,' said Cal head coach Dave O'Neill. 'It's exciting to go up against quality crews, and this is a great way to jump into the thick of the season. All of these teams are well coached and have great athletes, so we need to be fully prepared for each race.'
Cal's Schedule: Cal varsity eight takes on No. 4 Ohio State in its first race of the Windermere Crew Classic at Redwood Shores, followed by races against No. 16 Boston University and No. 3 Virginia.
The Field: No. 2 Cal is the highest ranked women's crew at this year's regatta. No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 10 Washington, No. 15 Stanford, No. 16 Boston University are also ranked in the top 20. Oregon State and Syracuse round out the field. Cal, Virginia and Ohio State were the only crews to row in both the varsity eight grand final and second varsity eight grand final at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Last Year at the Windermere Crew Classic: For the third straight year the women's varsity crew dominated the field at the Windermere Crew Classic, winning all the races they entered. The Bears' first race of the regatta was an 11 second victory over No. 14 Michigan State, followed by a win against Cornell. The next day they capped it all off with a win over No. 9 Virginia, making them one of only a few undefeated teams at the regatta.
