200 Free Relay Team Turn In Top Prelim Time at NCAA's.

Atlanta, Ga - It was a morning of mixed results for the top-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team during first day preliminary action on Thursday at the 2006 NCAA Championship at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
First the good news, the 200 free relay team of Jason Dunford, Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Kyle Ransom and Matt Crowe turned in the best time of the day in the prelims at 1:16.76. Arizona, which is expected to compete for the team title, finished second at 1:17.01 with Texas finishing with the third best time of 1:17.50. Auburn, the defending NCAA team championship finished fourth at 1:17.52.
Two Stanford swimmers advanced to the finals in the 200 IM. Nate Cass finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 1:45.36 while Keenan Newman was eighth (1:45.53). Tobias Oriwol was ninth (1:45.67), Mark Stephens was 14th (1:46.30). Hongzhe Sun, the Pac-10 champion in the 200 IM, is fighting the flu and finished in 24th place (1:47.35). Freshman Paul Kornfeld was 40th (1:49.95).
In the 50 free, Pac-10 champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner finished eighth in the prelims to advance to tonight's final with a time of 19.44. Cease Cielo of Auburn had the top time in the prelims at 19.20. Stanford freshman Jason Dunford was 20th (19.73), Kyle Ransom was 26th (19.82) and Matt Crowe was 33rd (19.97).
In the 500 free, one of Stanford five swimmers advanced to the championship final. Shaun Phillips placed sixth in the prelims with a time of 4:17.08. Peter Vanderkaay of Michigan had the best time in the prelims at 4:13.49. Andy Grant was 20th (4:22.08), Danny Beal was 37th (4:31.06), Michael McLean was 38th (4:31.08) and Noa Sakamoto was 40th (4:36.06).
In the 400 medley relay, Stanford advanced to the finals with a fifth place showing in the prelims. The team of Hongzhe Sun, Paul Kornfeld, Jason Dunford and Ben Wildman-Tobriner was timed in 3:09.56. Arizona led the field at 3:07.75. Auburn was fourth (3:09.53).
