March 25, 2006
The fifth-ranked UCLA men's golf team prepares to compete in the National Invitational Tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, Mar. 26-28, at Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, AZ.
The course measures 7,094 yards and carries a par of 72. Eighteen holes will be played each day.
'We are excited to get back at it,' said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'Tucson National is a solid course and will host the NCAA West Regional in May. The field is always strong, and after finals week, we are looking forward to some great golf.'
At No. 5, the Bruins are the highest ranked team in the tournament, which also includes No. 6 UNLV and No. 9 Arizona State. Tulsa (15th) and Pepperdine (21st) complete the list of Top 25 teams.
UCLA enters this event with eight victories this season, three by the Gold Team and five by the Blue Team. In the next 10 weeks, the Gold Team will participate in at least five events and the Blue Team will play once.
Freshman Erik Flores remains the top-ranked UCLA player at No. 18. His scoring average of 72.7 leads the team as does his five rounds under 70. In six events, he has finished in the Top 10 four times.
Sophomore Daniel Im ranks 24th nationally this week with a scoring average of 72.8, tied for second best on the squad. He ranks second on the team with eight rounds under par.
Junior Chris Heintz ranks 42nd and boasts the team's fourth-best scoring average at 73.7. Earlier this month, Heintz won his first collegiate title at the UC Riverside-hosted Braveheart Classic.
Freshman Lucas Lee is tied for second on the team with a scoring average of 72.8, including a team best nine rounds under par. He won twice last quarter, capturing the Cougar Invitational and tying for first place with teammate Matt Marshall at The Battle of Monarch Bay.
Sophomore Kevin Chappell ranks 73rd nationally and tied for sixth at the Mercedes-Benz Invitational in February.
Following the Arizona event, the Bruins will travel to Augusta, GA, to play in a dual match against Augusta State on Mar. 30 at Forest Hills Golf Club beginning at 12:30 p.m. Following the competition, a junior clinic will be held at Forest Hills and both teams will participate.
The Bruins also will participate in the Augusta State Invitational, Apr. 1-2 at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, GA. The Augusta State Invitational precedes The Masters at Augusta National, and the Bruins will attend a practice round there on Apr. 3.
