Hutchinson Sets USC Women's Discus Record At Trojan Invitational

USC junior Kate Hutchinson threw a school-record 181-7 in the women's discus and defending NCAA champions Virginia Powell and Jesse Williams won their signature events to highlight .the Trojan Invitational held today at Loker Stadium before an estimated 1,000 fans.

Hutchinson's throw of 181-7 in the discus passed Cythia Ademiluyi's previous school record of 177-10 set on Feb. 23, 2002. Hutchinson's previous best discus throw had been 177-5, set on March 15.

Powell, who has won the last three NCAA sprint hurdles titles (2005 and 2006 indoor and 2005 outdoor), won the women's 100m high hurdles with a time of 12.82. The senior is the USC record-holder in the 100m HH and co-owns the collegiate mark in the event with a personal outdoor-best of 12.61 set on June 26, 2005. Powell's time in the 100m HH is also the best by a female college hurdler this season.

Powell also ran the first leg of USC's winning 4x100m relay team that ran a season-best 44.12. She was followed in the relay by sophomores Jessica Onyepunuka, Talia Stewart and Carol Rodriguez. Rodriguez also won the women's 200m race with a personal-best 23.39, the 10th fastest time in school history and the fastest time run by a collegiate women this season.

Williams, the school-record holder (7-6 1/2) and three-time defending NCAA high jump champion (2005 and 2006 indoor and 2005 outdoor) won the men's high jump at a height of 7-4 1/4. The senior also competed in the long jump and placed second with a personal record of 24-8 1/2.

Senior Karen Freberg won the women's shot put with a season-best 53-8 1/2, which ranks fourth all-time on the USC women' shot put list. Freberg is a transfer from Florida who has a personal best in the shot of 55-9 3/4.

Freshman pole vaulter Derek Scott had a personal-best vault of 17-1 to win the men's event. Scott's previous best pole vault at USC had been 16-0 3/4.

Senior Garry Jones won the 100m dash with a personal best of 10.38. Teammates sophomore Christopher Peart placed fifth with a time of 10.69 and junior Roy Alugbue placed eighth with a time of 10.77.

Also winning events for USC at the Trojan Invitational were junior Treani Swain in the women's 400m race (54.58), junior Michelle Sanford in the women's long jump (20-1 3/4) and the triple jump (41-5 1/4), freshman Eva Orban in the women's hammer throw competition on March 24 (212-10), USC's women's 4x400m relay team of junior Whitney Graham, Rodriguez, junior Tara Davis-Quarrie and Stewart (3:39.54), sophomore Lionel Larry in the men's 400m race (46-7), junior Raphael Asafo-Agyei in the 800m (1:48.96), USC's men's 4x100m relay team of Jones, senior Philip Francis, freshman Matthew Palmer and junior Roy Alugbue (39.85), USC men's 4x400m relay team of Larry, senior Jeff Garrison, Palmer and Asafo-Agyei (3:07.08), senior Noah Bryant in the men's shot (61-9 1/2) and junior Adam Midles in the men's hammer throw competition on March 24 (213-5).

Joining USC today in competition at the Trojan Invitational were Oregon, Washington State, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Poly Pomona, Cal State San Luis Obispo, UCSB, San Diego Mesa College, Pasadena CC, El Camino College, Cerritos College and Long Beach CC.
