UW Varsity Men and Women Win Morning Races at Windermere Classic

March 25, 2006

BELMONT, Calif. - The Washington men's varsity and junior varsity crews both won their events Saturday morning at Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.

The UW women's varsity and junior varsity crews also won their morning races, while the women's novice entry fell to California.

All six crews will row again Sunday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. when Washington's women's junior varsity crew races Syracuse's entry.

The Henley-style match racing format is being used for this weekend's regatta in the Bay Area. Rather than rowing the course alongside five other boats as is customary, each crew competes head-to-head with just one other boat. The Collegiate Classic is hosted for the fourth year by the same real estate company that has been a 19-year sponsor of the Windermere Cup, Washington's annual Opening Day regatta that takes place May 6 in Seattle.

The UW men's varsity eight went wire-to-wire to defeat Pennsylvania, posting a superior split time at every quarter of the race to defeat the Quakers by almost three seconds. UW covered the 2,000-meter course in 6-minutes, 36.01-seconds and Stanford had a time of 6:38.93. The women's varsity eight jumped ahead early against Boston University and held on, finishing in 7:22.19.

The junior varsity men defeated UC Davis in the morning, while the JV women's crew coasted to a win over Boston University. The men's time was unavailable as of this release, while the women finished in 8:04.11.

The women's novice eight fell to California, finishing in 7:58.67. The Golden Bears posted a time of 7:43.84.

All six Washington crews will return to the Redwood Shores course for another race Sunday morning.
