Varsity Eight Win Headlines Successful Spring Debut

Medical Lake, Wash. -- Washington State's women's rowing team swept its varsity races against Gonzaga, British Columbia and Simon Fraser, Saturday on Silver Lake.

The varsity eight's 10-second win over Gonzaga earned WSU rights to the Fawley Cup trophy for the ninth straight year, annually given to the winner of the WSU-Gonzaga varsity eight race. British Columbia finished the race in third, 14 seconds behind the Cougars.

In the second varsity eight race, WSU finished with a winning time of 7:12, the fasted time of the day. Simon Fraser clocked-in at 7:38, one second ahead of Gonzaga's second varsity eight boat.

WSU claimed first and third place in the varsity four race, with times of 8:22 and 8:51 respectively. An SFU-UBC boat took second with a time of 8:50. The Bulldogs finished last at 9:01.

The Cougars also finished first in the second varsity four race, finishing in 8:28, 20 seconds faster than UBC.

WSU's novice boats each placed second in their races.

The Cougars return to action next weekend on Mission Bay at the San Diego Crew Classic.
