Softball Falls to Northwestern, 3-2

LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team (28-2) suffered its second loss of the 2006 season on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium, losing to No. 16 Northwestern by a 3-2 margin. Caitlin Benyi and Jodie Legaspi both connected on solo home runs in the Bruin loss.
The Bruins took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Jodie Legaspi connected on her ninth home run of the season, over the right field fence.
Norhtwestern tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out home run by Garland Cooper, a hit that broke up a perfect game through three and two-thirds being pitched by UCLA's Anjelica Selden.
The Wildcats then took the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Tammy Williams led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored from second base on a single up the middle by Kristen Amegin. UCLA tied the game with one out in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run by Caitlin Benyi, a ball that hit the batting cage over the fence in right centerfield.
In the top of the seventh, Northwestern's Sheila McCorkle led off the inning with a bunt single, followed by a hit up the middle from Erin Dyer. An errant throw advanced McCorkle to third and Dyer to second, putting McCorkle in position to score on a slap hit to left by Ashley Crane. The Bruins were able to get out of the inning getting the lead runner on fielders choice plays on the next two batters before Katie Logan grounded into a fielders choice with the out at second base to end the inning.
UCLA's Whitney Holum led off the bottom of the second reaching on an error and was replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. Ashley Herrera put down a successful sacrifice bunt, but the Bruins were unable to advance Eno any farther, ending the game with a 3-2 Bruins loss.
UCLA returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, with a noon doubleheader at Easton Stadium against UCSB.
