Between The Bars

March 27, 2006

The Pac-10 Championship was a great meet for us. It was the first time this season that we competed knowing each athlete would hit their routines. Even though our training in the gym has been better than most years, we hadn't put it all together in competition until this last weekend. (We made the decision to compete Tasha on floor, vault, and beam, even though she didn't feel 100% ready, to get her competing as much as possible before NCAA's.)

The impressive part for us was the demeanor with which our team competed. They competed hard, confidently, and had a GREAT time as a team battling for the 'win'. We dug ourselves a hole early on in our first event but kept inching our way back to the top, routine by routine, posting our highest score of the season. It was exciting to see our team, that has had a REALLY rough season, not let a few mistakes early on in the meet detour them from their mission.

When we finished our last rotation, beam, I looked at Chris and Marshall, and we all just said, 'Finally.' Non-complacency and persistent hard work this season has FINALLY come together. Our team has earned the feeling of confidence in competition.

Obviously, it was hard to compete 98% of the meet so well and not walk away with a 'win', but that's what makes athletics so much fun. Stanford was on fire, and Oregon State had an amazing meet.

As Tiger Woods said last night on 60 Minutes about athletics: 'You never, ever arrive, but it sure is fun trying!'
