March 27, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - For the first time since the 1989 season, the Washington State University baseball team has earned a national ranking. In its latest weekly release of NCAA Division I baseball teams, Collegiate Baseball newspaper's poll has the Cougars ranked No. 28.
The ranking marks the first appearance by a WSU squad since March 6, 1989, when the Cougars were ranked No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. WSU's highest national ranking came one season prior when Baseball America had them at No. 18 during the 1988 season.
WSU enters today's Pacific-10 Conference-opening series finale at Stanford with a 20-6 record, including two wins over the No. 17 Cardinal. Saturday's 7-1 victory at Stanford marked the first win over the Cardinal since the 1978 season and the first win in the series at Palo Alto since 1971.
