Alex Pribble Named First-Team Pac-10 All-Academic
March 28, 2006
BERKELEY - Junior guard Alex Pribble, who boasts a 3.30 GPA in sociology, has been named to the first-team Pac-10 All-Academic unit, the conference office announced Tuesday.
In addition, senior guard Martin Smith has earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honors.
Pribble, a 6-4, 215-pounder from Fairfax, Calif., was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic choice last year. A former walk-on who was rewarded with a scholarship prior to the 2005-06 campaign, he saw action in 24 of Cal's 31 games during the season, averaging 0.6 ppg and 0.8 rpg.
Pribble's most significant action came against Long Beach State Nov. 21 when he finished with three points, seven rebounds and five assists in 23 minutes. He scored a season-best four points in a win at Arizona State in January.
Pribble's award marks the seventh time since the 2001 season that Cal has had a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Dennis Gates, now a Golden Bear assistant coach, earned the honor in 2001 and '02, while Amit Tamir also claimed first-team notice twice, in 2003 and '04. Other first-team choices were Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Morgan Lingle, both in 2001.
Smith, who was limited to just seven games during his senior year due to a pair of injuries, will graduate this May with his degree in interdisciplinary studies.
