Cal Baseball Tops Arizona, 3-2
March 30, 2006
BERKELEY, CALIF. - Behind to pitching of junior right-hander Brandon Morrow and a three-run homer by junior catcher Garrett Bussiere, the California baseball team topped Arizona, 3-2, in the first game of a Pac-10 series Thursday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 15-11 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10, while the Wildcats fell to 11-13 and 0-1 in league play.
Morrow, a third-team preseason All-American in Baseball America, was again stellar, improving his record to 6-0 by throwing 8.0 innings with five hits, two runs, three walks and nine strikeouts. He now has 63 strikeouts in 57.0 innings this season with a 1.74 ERA. Morrow's only runs allowed were a two-run homer to the Wildcat's Jon Gaston in the seventh inning to make the score, 3-2.
The hitting star for Cal was Bussiere, who gave the Bears their scoring punch with a three-run homer off of Arizona's freshman right-hander Preston Guilmet (2-4, 7.0 innings, seven hits, three unearned runs, one walk, five strikeouts) in the fourth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, a throwing error by Wildcat third baseman Colt Sedbrook on a Josh Satin ground ball helped extend the inning, setting up Bussiere's heroics.
Senior right-hander Jeremy Burchett earned his second save of the season by pitching the top of the ninth. With one out, Burchett gave up back-to-back singles to Gaston and Korad Schmidt, but was able to get out of the inning when Brad Boyer flew out to Brennan Boesch in center field, and Boesch was able to double up Gaston at second base.
The Bears will next host Arizona in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Friday, Mar. 31 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Arizona: Gaston, two-run homer in the seventh inning.
